Sea Pottery Cape Hatteras National Seashore
Photo of the Day: February 23, 2022

Did you know that sea pottery, or sea china, was a thing?  I didn’t!

Sea pottery is shards of broken earthenware that has undergone the same process as sea glass:  broken, tumbled, smoothed and spit back into the shell hash with the tides.  When I first started beachcombing, I didn’t know pottery was really something I should be collecting.  In fact, I tossed back several pieces of white china that I found along the beach.  What a rookie, huh?

This little guy was a shard that I found on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.  I distinctly remember finding a few other similar pieces but I’m not sure I safely escorted them back and into the collection!  Perhaps they are still lost in jacket pockets or backpack hideaways :-).
