Magazine:  Smoky Mountain Living

Issue:  August / September 2014, The Lay of the Land, Volume 14, Issue 4

Story:  Artists of Dusk & Dawn by Anna Oakes (Cover + p.39, 41)

From a content standpoint, this opportunity with Smoky Mountain Living Magazine in August / September 2014 was my largest yet.  Contacted by the article writer, Anna Oakes, I was invited to have a conversation about my new business and my artistic process in general for an interior story to be called, “Artists of Dusk & Dawn,” detailing several open-air artists working around the southern Appalachians.  Somewhat ironically I was in North Carolina at the time photographing the annual Catawba Rhododendron bloom atop the Roan Highlands.  Seizing serendipity, I asked Anna if she would prefer to meet in person instead of over the phone.  We ended up walking around beautiful Price Lake near Blowing Rock, North Carolina while talking–it was the absolute perfect setting for an introvert like myself to feel comfortable and at-home enough to open up and talk a bit!  Anna did a wonderful job with her writing of making me sound intelligible and somewhat coherent, so kudos to her for that.

Following the interview, I was super excited to hear that I would have the opportunity to provide a cover image for the issue as well.  This was my first cover!  The editors chose a vertical photograph of Blue Ridge Pinnacle, one of my personal favorite vantages from within the Blue Ridge.  The article ran in the August / September 2014 issue, and featured my images of Grassy Ridge and the Carolina Blue Moon within.
