This is my favorite waterfall. This is where, when I lived in Upstate South Carolina, I went to sit and find silence; the type of silence that is loud on the exterior and quiet on the interior. Most waterfalls in the Southern Appalachians are not solitary features. If you explore upstream or downstream, you’ll likely find additional cascades. This is especially true dealing with waterfalls along the Southern Blue Ridge Escarpment where the geography is steep and water abundant. This waterfall is just that, an upper portion of a more well-known waterfall below.
I’ve often pondered whether a waterfall can be thoroughly documented with a few trips, or if, as I have come to believe, a waterfall must be visited frequently over different seasons and weather conditions to truly be known. There’s no combination of skill and gear that would make me comfortable enough to forego multiple visits to a waterfall: no portfolio shot that would preclude me from returning again and again. In essence, water is always changing; its character and mood and color and temperment dependent on so many factors. I’ve been visiting this waterfall for over twenty years.
