The budding flowers of a Virginia Bluebell wildflower along the Potomac Heritage Trail in Northern Virginia
Photo of the Day: March 4, 2022

Travel was shut down in 2020 as we all wrapped our heads around the novel coronavirus.  That meant no trip to Charleston, South Carolina for me.  Instead, I began to focus my attention on documenting the spring ephemeral wildflowers in my local parks.  The Potomac Heritage Trail (PHT) was the primary feeder trail I used for my explorations.  At a time of so much uncertainty, I was grateful for the local parks that remained open and the trails that allowed me to continue my outdoor exploration and inspiration.

In Northern Virginia, the spring event that gets the most attention is often the Cherry Blossom blooms along the Tidal Basin in Washington D.C.  At the same time, however, the more diminutive Virginia Bluebells are coming up along the banks of the Potomac River and area tributaries.  They begin as a deep purple and transition towards a sky blue and cotton candy pink coloration as they mature into bell shaped blooms.  I find the Virginia Bluebells to be the most impressive wildflower bloom in Northern Virginia.
