Reflection photography is hit or miss with my clients and friends: they either love it or they don’t get it! Obviously, I love it :-).
The historic Whalehead Club–originally called Corolla Island- is a 21,000 square foot Great Gatsbyesque mansion built in 1925 and located in Corolla, North Carolina. The home embodies both great ambition and wealth. Designed in the “Art Nouveau” architectural style, the home is highly ornamented, bold, and detailed with plenty of curving lines. The Whalehead Club is located on the shores of the Currituck Sound and is part of what is now called Historic Corolla Park.
This reflection photograph is not the main home but the boathouse. Corolla Island was built before roads and utilities. Thus, an enormous diesel generator and water pump were housed within this boathouse, allowing Corolla Island to generate it’s own power and water. The boathouse is finished in a beautiful warm orange/peach color. It faces directly west towards the Currituck Sound. When the sun drops into the western sky on clear evenings, the low-angled light hits the warmth of the boathouse and–if the winds lay calm–reflects richly into the lagoon waters. It is absolutely irresistable to me as a photographer. I’ve spent many mornings and evenings stuck in a reflection at this location!
