I was not prepared to photograph wildflowers during the month of January. I simply didn’t think anything would be flowering at the Outer Banks in the heart of winter. Much to my surprise, however, whenever a warm day or two was in the forecast, the front yards of the homes in historic downtown Manteo would come alive with colorful blooms. I took note of the wildflowers while my sister and I made our daily laps around town.
As strange as it may sound, the landlord of our property had a lawn service that would come by every few weeks and cut the grass (yes, it was January!). So, I was quick to jump into the yard one warm, rainy afternoon when the Wood Sorrel were up and open–and before the lawnmower got to them!
