The obvious spot for sunset photography in Corolla, North Carolina is Historic Corolla Park and the Whalehead Club.  The Whalehead Club is a 21,000 square foot art nouveau home built in the early 1920’s, complete with it’s own lagoon and boathouse.  The entrance to the small lagoon/marina features an elevated wooden bridge that provides unimpeded views west over the Currituck Sound.

I’ve taken a number of fine artsy types of photographs from this location.  This is more of a literal interpretation:  not quite raw enough to be photo journalism, but certainly closer in that direction than I typically run.  I do love to include small human figures in larger landscapes.  My portfolio won’t bear that out if you go searching primarily because I travel solo.  I often, however, wish I had a female figure who was free to travel the Carolinas with me and provide human interest in my frames.  The potential of the final photographs would certainly increase as end users often gravitate towards the human figure in place.

This was not a staged photograph.  I was all setup to shoot the sunset as it dropped behind the bridge when these two entered the frame and began posing and photographing on their own.  I just took advantage of the opportunity!  This little bridge is rarely ever empty during sunset.  It’s a magnet come days last light.  I particularly loved the way this woman’s long hair caught the low-angled sunlight from the falling sun.
