Stack of sea glass on top of Moon Snail Shell
Photo of the Day: February 5, 2022

Walking the beach is like treasure hunting, at least for me.  Every single night the entire physical landscape is washed and stripped.  Changed.  New tides bring forth new treasures.  The ocean redistributes this wealth in accordance with weather, winds, tides etc.  Every day is an entirely new experience.  Imagine if a forest had a similar refresh every night:  plants, wildflowers, mushrooms etc.  It’s really quite incredible.  Is there a more engaging place to take a daily walk?

I’m as drawn to sea glass as the next.  It sits humbly in the sand and shell hash more like a rare stone than the litter that it actually is.  Cobalt, jade, turquoise, green, clear, brown…and every once in a blue moon, a chunk of pure black frosted glass (known as pirate glass).

I’m also drawn to sea stones.  The obvious are quartz: crystal clear, milky white, and rose pink.  I often mistakenly pick up a rock when I’m thinking sea glass.  I’m also drawn to the smooth simplicity of the sandstone/limestones that are pictured here at the bottom of the stack (beneath the sea glass).  Their texture is so amazing to run the hand over.  And, their simplicity is extremely attractive to me.

It’s hard to get creative with sea glass and sea stones for me.  Individually on the beach, I cannot deny their beauty.  As a group, figuring out how to display them is the difficult part.  Stacking seems the default for most, myself included.  So, happy #stackersaturday to the beachcombers out there!
