Sunrise Cape Hatteras National Seashore
Photo of the Day: February 15, 2022

Pure seascapes are something I love to shoot.  Nothing but the ocean and the sky.  The interface between land and water; marine and terrestrial.  Moving water is mesmerizing to me and so fun to shoot behind the lens.  Add some good light and all the ingredients are there for something special.

On most mornings I’m careful to ensure that I’ve got a clearly defined subject:  a lighthouse, a pier, etc.  Sometimes, however, it’s just less restrictive to take any one of the seventy plus miles of Cape Hatteras National Seashore and see if there’s something neat happening along the beach.

This morning found a high tide pulling strongly back towards the Atlantic Ocean, leaving behind these spectacular ripples.  I didn’t have time to take off my boots.  The sun was dancing with the clouds and it was go time.  In I went.  I tried to line up the reflective colored light with the textured ripples on the beach.  I thought the end result was a really cool moment, more unique than if I had gone to a clearly defined subject.
