Sunset reflections at Whalehead Club Corolla NC
Photo of the Day: February 10, 2022

In 2019 I teamed up with Kristi Parsons to put together a 2020 Spirit of the Southern Appalachian Mountains calendar.  Kristi’s efforts to sell the calendar were so successful that we decided to use the profits to spend a week in the Outer Banks, a place Kristi had yet to visit.  February was the perfect month for our visit as the off-season prices allowed our money to go further.  And a bonus was the uncrowded and intimate access to otherwise popular destinations.

Kristi arrived to North Carolina on a rare night with calm winds.  She was a trooper and allowed me to put her back into the car for another hour-long drive to Corolla Historic Park, site of The Whalehead Club.  Most folks would probably cart a first-timer over to Bodie Island Lighthouse or Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for an introduction to the Outer Banks.  However, as a photographer, calm conditions are not to be wasted!  The grounds of the Whalehead Club face west (sunset) and have ample ponds and lagoons that reflect beautifully.

This was literally the first shutter actuation I made that evening.  I’ve always been drawn to reflection, symmetry, and simplicity.
