The Chattooga River was designated Wild & Scenic on May 10, 1974. Fifty years later in May 2024, I found myself behind the camera on the banks of this beautiful river. The Wild & Scenic Chattooga River has long been a favorite destination: I was introduced while attending nearby Clemson University by friends who were avid fly fisherman. The wild nature of this waterway immediately captured me. To this day, the Chattooga River represents, for me, the Southern Appalachian Mountains: mysterious, chaotic, green, flowing, tough, wild.
Very few roads intersect the Chattooga River. Trails are equally non-existent for those who want to walk near the water (without wading through it!). This relative inaccessability is one of the most exciting features of the Chattooga River, for me. I want to make so many more photographs of this river. I know, however, that each effort is going to be real. No shortcuts. This is a place of adventure.
