Live Oak Tree and flowering Azalea at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens in Charleston, South Carolina
Photo of the Day: March 3, 2022

March is all about the Lowcountry of South Carolina.  There’s no comparable in my annual photography travels.  Color.  So much color.  The most amazing trees.  Draping heavy to the ground–and below–and then back up again.  Flowers.  Riotous azalea.  Spicy vanilla purple wisteria.  Wispy Spanish Moss.  And architecture.  Historic buildings.  Cobblestone streets.  Window boxes full of well-tended flowers.  Bridges.  Fountains.  Markets.  It is a place of plenty, all coming together in the spring for one hell of a show.

Each year for almost a decade I’ve made the trip down to Charleston, South Carolina with my mother.  One of our favorite places to spend the morning is Magnolia Plantation & Gardens.  Unlike many formal gardens, Magnolia Plantation & Gardens is known as a “romantic-styled” garden.  Meaning simply, the arrangement and management of plantings is less rigid and planned and more organic and flowing.  In plain speak, it feels more natural and less dominated.  When the flowers are kicking, it’s hard to imagine a more magical place to spend some time behind the camera.
