As a kid, my family always went to the Outer Banks in the heat of summer. I came to love the Outer Banks during summer. First, it was simply spending all day long in the waves. Not coming out until my eyes were bloodshot and my skin sunburned. Then, it was fishing. Surf fishing first, maturing finally into wading through the soundside estuaries with light tackle and high hopes. The one constant in all of my memories: it was hot! The sand was hot, the sun was hot, the air was hot.
It was only when I picked up a camera that I considered long-term stays in the Outer Banks during the winter. The camera, as it has many times before, provided the motivation for me to experience a place in a different–and perhaps deeper–way. I absolutely love spending a winter month in the Outer Banks now. Though I do feel guilt for crashing in on the place when locals are likely starving for a bit of time without tourist pressures. Hopefully, I can keep my presence light and without bother and continue to enjoy the landscapes of winter.
