“If you let yourself experience a place physically, bodily, take it in, let it have its effect on you, then it will.”

Frances Mayes

Who I am

I am a photographer who loves being outside.  I’m a windows down, take the long way, rather walk than drive, leave the cell phone behind sort of guy.  I believe that time is the most important asset on this earth and as such, I like to spend mine outdoors on a good adventure!

What I Do

I use the camera and a healthy dose of sweat-equity to engage the landscapes of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and Carolina coastlines.  Combined with a strong creative desire and a curious need to learn about my surroundings, I create visual and written content honoring place.

Why I do It

Reciprocity.  I view the natural world as a gift.  As such, I attribute great value to outdoor places and I feel a strong responsibility to care for their longevity and health.  I give of my attention, my time and my effort; in return I get back so much more.  The focus is always on the respect and appreciation of place.

I began photography full-time because of my love for being active outdoors:  the adventure of challenging environments, the freedom of the trail, and the fleeting moments of wonder.  I realized early that certain outdoor places–and certain activities within those places–just made me feel more alive.  The outdoors provided me an outlet to be creative, as well as a dynamic environment to continuously learn.  Now, being outside at every opportunity, intentionally seeking new experiences within authentic environments (not virtual or controlled) is my ideal of living.  My goal has never been to create art directly–or to be a fine-art photographer or artist for that matter–but instead to learn, to understand and to respect the places that bring me fulfillment and to share that with others.

Year in Review: 2022

2022: Year in ReviewFirst with the good. It was a tremendously productive year.  I processed, catalogued, and keyworded over seven hundred new images.  Nearly two per day on average.  In the field, I connected more intimately with the landscape.  I found new (and...
